As in every area of life, there are myths and there are facts.  Those who mourn and those who support them need to understand that our culture has perpetrated many myths about grieving.  Here are just a few:

  1. Grief stops after the funeral/memorial
  2. If a person laughs it means their grief is over
  3. You get over grief like you get over the flu
  4. Everybody goes through the same stages of grief
  5. Not talking and not crying is a sign of strength.

The fact is: grief is normal.

Grief will change our lives forever.  How that change affects us is up to us.  How will we cooperate with the truth about bereavement?  Will we allow our pain to form us into stronger, compassionate people or will we allow our sorrow to ruin us with substance abuse, hiding from our own selves and disallowing others to come close to comfort?

The fact is: good grief is hard work,

but it’s worth it for the long haul. Focus on the facts about grief and the myths will dissipate, taking you nearer to the core of healing and a new life.
